性狀描述： 無色針狀晶體(由水重結晶)，或無色葉狀晶體(由苯重結晶)。熔點203℃。pK(25℃)值1.77×10-4。 易溶于乙醇、乙醚，能溶于熱苯，難溶于冷水，不溶于石油醚。與乙酐共煮，得吲哚-2-羧酸的環狀二內酰胺。與乙酐在封閉管中加熱，即變為2-乙酰吲哚(少量)和1，3-二乙酰吲哚。遇靛紅及濃硫酸呈紫色，遇三氯化鐵呈棕紅色 。
